Green deicing this winter

Keep your driveway and sidewalks organically clear this winter

Keeping roads and sidewalks safe can be a green challenge during the winter. Ice on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots create slippery conditions for pedestrians, drivers and environment. Using a plow or backbreaking shovel doesn't always produce the best results, and doesn't deal with icy surfaces very well.
The typical winter modus operandi is to use chemical deicers and/or a grit like sand. Not always an environmentally friendly solution.
Salt has traditionally been used to de-ice roads, spread via snowplows or dump trucks designed to disperse it, along with sand and gravel. Sodium chloride (rock salt) is normally used, as it is inexpensive and readily available in large quantities. The major problem with salt is the tendency to cause corrosion, rusting steel in vehicles and reinforcement (rebar) used in concrete bridges.
In the last decade, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride has become popular, which not only depress the freezing point of water to a much lower temperature, but also produce an heat reaction.
In recent years, green deicing has been introduced. Organic compounds have been developed that address the environmental issues connected with salts and have longer residual effects when spread on roadways. These compounds are generated as byproducts of agricultural operations such as sugar beet. This new deicing technology is easy to use and won't damage your plants like salt does. Since it does not damage your yard, it seems like an ideal choice for home use.
There has also been limited experimentation with embedding sidewalks with flexible pipes for carrying hot water. The water radiates heat through the concrete and prevents snow and ice from accumulating. Energy costs are a trade off to the chemicals used and should be taken into account if thinking about this technique.

Hey Baby, Reduce your Carbon Butt Print

Go Green, Baby!

A baby uses an average of 6,700 diapers before potty training. Last summer my hippy friends were out festing at a remote location and couldn’t use their normal organic cloth diapers. With some advance web surfing, the found great bleach free diapers made by Seventh Generation. Here's a tip, Amazon sells the diapers for 15% off retail price and the order usually qualifies for free shipping too.

So unless you’re in a pinch, reach for cloth diapers first.

  • Cloth diapers are softer against your baby’s skin
  • Chlorine Free cloth diapers are free of many chemicals contained in disposable diapers

The poop on disposable diapers

  • Over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill
  • It is estimated to be about 250-500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose
  • Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills
  • In one year, more than 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum stock and 20 pounds of chlorine are used to produce disposable diapers for a single baby

Reduce your Carbon Butt Print and shop for high end second hand diapers such as Fuzzi Bunz, bumGenius and Kissaluvs. You can usually find a bargin on eBay and Craigslist.

Plant Twitters its Thirsty and Lawn Mows Itself

Twittering Tradescantia! The next SMS you get may be "OMG FEED ME SEYMOUR. FML". It could happen! And how about a hybrid, robotic lawnmower?

It's like a Roomba for the yard. Husqvarna’s Automower Solar Hybrid

The gadget manages both mowing and charging automatically and is suitable for areas up to 1/2 acre at a time. When the battery needs recharging the mower returns to the charging station, charges and then continues mowing. The mower can be adjusted to lawns with a complicated shape using settings via the keypad and display.

Robot lawn mowers cost some green, usually $1,000 and $3,000.

Hold onto your iPhone, there's a device called Botanicalls which Twitters to you depending on plant moisture levels. The new gadget is an upgrade from an earlier model that enabled plants to make a phone call to their owners when they needed water.

Imagine a Tweet that said, "You didn't water me enough." followed by a Tweet from your friend, "Hey go home and water your plants, they're dying." Is it Big Brother Bromeliad?

The device creator assures people that Botanicalls is not intended to create a robotic garden, instead it is to re-engaging people with nature and get them to pay attention to their plants. ThinkGeek has plant kits for $99.99.

Earth Hour 2009

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour. www.earthhour.org

an All-Natural Kitty Litter

After writing the blog on biodegradable poop bags for dogs, I received “equal time” requests for cats. So thanks to your probing paws, today's entry is about greener, healthier, kitty litter alternatives. A quick search on the web shows several outlets for organic kitty litter, so the supply is out there.

Did you know that cat litter started off with recycled, organic materials such as sand, sawdust, fireplace ashes and old newspaper? Each had their faults like unless the sawdust was from cedar there was no odor control. It wasn't until recent times that clumping, odor-control versions of cat litter were developed using things like clay (which is a non-renewable resource, removed from the ground, fill up landfills and never break down).

If you're a Do-It-Yourself type, you can pick up sawdust on the cheap from your local garden or hardware stores, or mix some baking soda in with sand or ash as an alternative to the cheaper grocery store kitty litter.

If you're not interested in a home made cat litter solution, there are several commercial alternatives available including Feline Pine and Yesterday's News.

Next up: Environmental alternatives for raccoons, squirrels, tigers and giraffes. Just kidding, I think.

Biodegradable poop bags

Here's a simple change people can do to make a daily chore a bit greener.

Your ears will perk up when you hear about this one, especially if you live in a city and have to pick up after your pup. 100% bio-degradable poop bags for dogs.

BioBag Dog holds the distinction of being the first biodegradable and compostable "plastic" pooper bag in the world.

Besides being the law in many towns, picking up after your pet is part of being a responsible pet owner. Polyethylene-based plastic bags can last hundreds of years and often "mummify" your pet's waste, which would otherwise decompose naturally. Now owners have a environmentally friendly solution, BioBag Dog.

In the past, the best solution for disposal of pet waste was to separate it from the bag or paper and flush it down the toilet. Using BioBags the waste and the bag can be thrown in your backyard compost, where both items can decompose naturally; the waste and bag can be buried, where micro-organisms will quickly eat both; the waste and bag can be set at curbside with other yard waste where communities collect biodegradable waste for composting. Disposal options vary by community.

Amazon.com sells BioBags from about $7.50 and up.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is Recycled to Build New Homes

2008 Rockefeller Xmas Tree Pictures, Images and PhotosThe country’s most popular tree is going Green. The eight-ton Christmas tree, stretching 72 feet above Rockefeller Center, is being milled into lumber for Habitat for Humanity homes in Brooklyn, New York.

This isn’t the first Rockefeller Center Xmas Tree to be recycled. In 2007, lumber from the tree was was used to build housing for survivors of Hurricane Katrina and in past years the tree was made into mulch for hiking trails and wooden toys for the animals at The Bronx Zoo.
In 2007, the Rock’s tree went "green," when it started using LED lights.
